We examine you for conditions like macular degeneration, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma. Macular degeneration is a condition that occurs when the macula of your eye begins to deteriorate. Generally, you lose your central vision, making it difficult to see fine details with images that are both close and far away. Your peripheral vision isn't affected by macular degeneration.

Diabetic retinopathy occurs when uncontrolled, or poorly managed, diabetes causes changes in the blood vessels in your eyes. Sometimes, you grow abnormal vessels. It doesn't always cause symptoms at first but can lead to vision loss and other visual disturbances over time.

Cataracts are a type of eye condition that causes a clouding over the lens of your eye. It can occur in one or both of your eyes. The clouding can cause your vision to become so cloudy that you can't see and will need a new lens to regain your vision.

Glaucoma is an eye issue that occurs when you have damage to your optic nerve. Usually, it's a result of pressure in your eye. It can lead to permanent blindness.

Managing Your Eye Condition

The first step to managing your eye condition is to diagnose it. Usually, this consists of the eye doctor evaluating your vision first using a device that has lenses that show you letters. You read the letters, and based on which line you can read, you receive a prescription. If you have any major deficits, it may signify a greater problem.

You may opt to have additional testing, or our optometrist may request you have further testing. During the testing, we analyze the pressure in your eyes to evaluate you for glaucoma. Our optometrist may use a special magnifying glass that allows our optometrist to see inside of your eye. Seeing inside of your eye lets our optometrist evaluate your eye for damage and other possible signs of an eye disease.

Once we diagnose it, your treatment may consist of corrective eyewear. In some cases, we may prescribe specialized eye drops or another eye disease management treatment.
