Topcon Maestro OCT Imaging from Our Optometrists in Belleville, Brighton, and Trenton
Retinal and optic nerve diseases can cause serious, irreversible damage that often leads to blindness. If you’re concerned about the health of your eyes, you probably understand the importance of regular, comprehensive eye exams. But, the technology used to administer those exams can make a big difference in how early eye diseases can be caught and treated. Here at Coward & Associates, we’ve invested in an advanced OCT (optical coherence tomography) device called the Topcon Maestro. This machine helps our optometrists in Belleville, Brighton, and Trenton detect sight-stealing disorders as promptly and accurately as possible.
Understanding Optical Coherence Tomography
Optical coherence tomography is a diagnostic technique that uses light waves the way ultrasound uses sound waves. As the light waves bounce off of tissues of different densities, they return to the machine at slightly different times. The degree of delay indicates the density of the tissue. The OCT machine can then take this data and construct cross-sectional images of the retinas and optic nerves, providing us with images we couldn’t achieve through other methods.
OCT is a tremendously helpful technology. By displaying any abnormally thin areas of tissue, the machine alerts our optometrists to possible conditions such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma. These conditions can grow steadily worse over time, damaging more and more tissue until you begin to lose your eyesight. OCT notifies us about them as early as possible so we can administer any necessary treatments to control them.
State-of-the Art Technology from Our Eye Doctors
Topcon is a leading maker of optometric diagnostic equipment — and our eye doctors use its Maestro machine for its ability to provide top-class ocular coherence tomography. This machine has some notable features that help us get the most out of OCT technology. One of its greatest strengths is its full-colour digital camera, which can give us spectacular, clear levels of detail and differentiation instantly. It can also create wide-field composite images to give us a sweeping, panoramic view of the eye’s interior tissues. The Topcon Maestro contains reference databases for RNFL (retinal nerve fiber layer) and ganglion cell complex (GCC) thickness so we can interpret your results more easily. The actual scanning process is fully automated, completely painless, and takes only a few minutes to complete.
