Dr. Bruce Coward – CEO/Owner & Experienced Optometrist
A Trenton native, Dr. Coward’s optometry experience spans over 30 years, beginning in 1983. A graduate of the University of Waterloo, he expanded what started as a solo practice in 1949, founded by Dr. Leonard Coward, into four locations.
Dr. Bruce Coward & Associates was established with the goal of offering exceptional eye care to generations of families. Dr. Coward is involved in professional associations and public service groups, with a passion for delivering exceptional eye care for every patient, young and old.
Dr. Jim Tzeng – Expert in Ocular Disease & Contact Lenses
Dr. Tzeng, a 1999 graduate of the University of Waterloo, specializes in ocular disease management and has experience from the Eye Institute of Utah. As a member of the Canadian and Ontario Associations of Optometrists, his expertise spans therapeutic eye care, laser vision consultation, contact lens therapies, and co-management.
Outside of work, Dr. Tzeng enjoys badminton, golf, biking, and following the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Dr. Nathalie Renaud – Bilingual Specialist in Pediatric & Preventive Eye Care
Dr Renaud is a Sudbury native whose passion for optometry shines through her dedication and expertise. With a Bachelor of Science from the University of Ottawa and an optometry degree from Université de Montréal, she’s a powerhouse in her field. Fluent in French and English, Dr. Renaud has been with the practice since 2000.
Specializing in pediatric eye care and contact lenses, including multifocal and specialty lenses, she makes children’s eye exams a positive experience. She’s also carried out voluntary eye care missions in Ecuador and Jamaica to facilitate preventative eye care for all. Beyond work, she loves skiing in the winter and paddleboarding in the summer.
Dr. Sanyukta Awale – Pediatric & Ocular Disease Specialist
A part of the Dr. Bruce Coward & Associates family since 2009, Dr. Awale specializes in pediatric optometry, ocular diseases and contact lenses. A graduate with honors from the University of Mumbai, she trained further at the University of Waterloo and L.V. Prasad Eye Institute.
Certified in using Therapeutic Pharmaceutical Agents, she is a pro at managing complex eye conditions like corneal diseases, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma. What makes her special is her belief in educating her patients and focusing on prevention to keep those eyes healthy for the long haul. Outside of work, you’ll find her dancing, exercising, or travelling with family.
Dr. Maria Coward – Researcher & Specialist in Age-Related Eye Conditions
Dr. Maria Coward specializes in age-related eye conditions, including macular degeneration. A member of the Batawa, Ontario community, she holds a Doctor of Optometry and Master of Science degree, as well as the holding the prestigious position as a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry. This distinction is only awarded to only the top 5% of Optometrists in Canada.
“Having become a Fellow will help me contribute to the profession of Optometry through research and leadership”, says Dr. Coward, “being a Fellow allows me to provide the highest standard of care to my patients by giving me access to the most up-to-date research available”.
Outside work, she enjoys skiing, pizzas and movies.
Dr. Ricky H.K. Cheung – Expert in Ocular Disease & Vision Therapy
Dr. Cheung brings a wealth of knowledge and skill to our team, specializing in ocular disease management and vision therapy. He earned his Doctor of Optometry degree with Dean’s Honors from the University of Waterloo and completed an externship at Lebanon Veteran Affairs.
During his intensive clinical externship at the Lebanon Veteran Affairs Medical Centre in Pennsylvania, he honed his ability to diagnose and manage ocular diseases like age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and dry eye syndrome. Dr. Cheung is also passionate about vision therapy and is dedicated to helping patients of all ages manage binocular vision disorders. He enjoys yoga, hiking, and family time.
Dr. William Ulakovic – Experienced Comprehensive Eye Care Provider
Dr. Ulakovic recently joined the practice, bringing extensive experience from his successful career in Thunder Bay. A University of Waterloo graduate, he has held leadership roles as President of the Ontario Association of Optometrists and Vice President of the College of Optometrists of Ontario.
Known for his thorough eye examinations and patient-centric approach, Dr. Ulakovic brings a wealth of experience in treating various eye conditions.
