Our Tips for Wearing a Face Mask with Glasses
Wearing a face mask is something we’re all getting used to. However, wearing a face mask with glasses can still be frustrating!
Foggy lenses can also mean not being able to see clearly, which can be dangerous too, especially when you’re walking or driving, and you can’t risk taking your mask off and exposing yourself and others to Covid-19.
Why Do Glasses Fog Up?
When your breath escapes through gaps between the mask and your face, it can rise up and can cause a fine layer of steam as it lands on the cooler surface of your glasses lenses – especially if you’re outside in colder weather. The amount will depend on your face shape, glasses style, and mask type, but even a little bit of fogging can be irritating.
Here are our top tips to keep your lenses fog-free so you can stay safe and wear your mask with confidence!
Make Sure Your Mask Fits Well
A close-fitting mask is one of the best ways to make sure your eye glasses don’t fog up. Everyone has a different face shape, and you might find that one style of mask fits you better than another. Try wearing a mask with an adjustable metal nose clip that you can shape closely around your nose to close off any gaps. You can also twist the ear loops to get a tighter fit, again reducing those pesky pockets of air.
Put Your Mask on First
Put your mask on first and make sure it’s fitted securely and covering your nose, before placing your glasses on top. You can experiment with where your mask and glasses sit on your nose to find the position that works best for you.
Tape It Down
If adjusting your mask isn’t preventing fogged-up lenses, then it might be time to bring in some reinforcements! Use a strip of tape or a bandaid to secure the mask to your nose and cheeks and close any air gaps.
Anti-Fog Spray For Glasses
An anti-fogging spray solution can stop your glasses steaming up. Simply spray it on and wipe with a soft cloth – you can ask one of our optometrists in Belleville for advice on the best spray to use for this.
