Pink Eye Treatment

Pink Eye Treatment at Our Optometrist in Belleville, Trenton, & Brighton

Pink eye is one of the most aptly named medical conditions. Generally when you have it, you know it because the whites of your eyes turn pink or red. Technically speaking, any inflammation or infection of the thin, clear covering of the white part of your eyeball is called pink eye or conjunctivitis. At Dr. Bruce D. Coward & Associations, we offer pink eye treatment at our optometrist offices in Belleville, Trenton and Brighton.

Pink Eye Care at Your Eye Doctor in Belleville, Trenton and Brighton

Pink eye care at your eye doctor in Belleville, Trenton and Brighton starts with carefully listening to your symptoms and then examining your eyes to diagnose and treat the specific type.

  • Viral conjunctivitis is the very contagious type, commonly seen in young children with colds and adults who work with children. Eyes may be itchy, watery or sensitive to light. Symptoms generally clear up after several days.
  • Bacterial conjunctivitis is also contagious and requires treatment from an eye doctor to prevent long-lasting damage. The corners of the eyes may have sticky yellow or greenish discharge and become crusty overnight. Prescription antibiotic ointments or drops treat this bacterial infection.
  • Allergic conjunctivitis is not contagious or triggered by an infection. Instead, environmental irritants trigger the watery, itching and burning eyes. Using allergy eye drops, taking allergy medications and eliminating allergic irritants helps relieve symptoms.

At-Home Pink Eye Treatment

Proper hygiene is essential for at-home pink eye treatment and prevention. If you have viral or bacterial pink eye, you cannot wear contact lenses or makeup. Avoid touching your eyes; wash your hands any time your touch your eyes. To relieve symptoms, apply a warm, wet washcloth to the eye; use a separate cloth for each eye, and use a fresh cloth each time. To prevent conjunctivitis, wash your hands frequently, and don’t share washcloths, pillowcases or makeup and always clean, remove and dispose of your contact lenses as instructed by your optometry office.
